Every day, thousands of New Yorkers struggle with a basic human need: How does one provide healthy food for a family when buying nutritious food means choosing among purchasing medicine, keeping the electricity on, or paying rent? How can someone sacrifice one necessity for another?
No person should have to make that choice. It is a sad truth that the cost of healthy food, especially kosher food, is outpacing many people’s budgets. Over 1.3 million New Yorkers rely on food assistance like food stamps, pantries, and soup kitchens -- this number will increase as rising unemployment forces many people to consider the need for food assistance, a majority of whom would be using this assistance for the first time.
